Well, after another round of tests and another week of waiting for the doctors to evaluate them, I have found out: not very much. UCSF generously donated some new testing procedures on their MRI machines...nice freebie...so on Monday they strapped me in and started banging away. Having had a couple of these previously, I expected to be on my way in a few minutes.

2 1/2 hours later (with a bathroom break in the middle) I emerged, with the sensation that I had just heard the worst techno-rock concert of all time. ("Dude! Play a different riff, PLEASE!") An outboard motor combined with a clanging dinner bell is not very interesting after twenty minutes. But to the benefit of science, we made it. The next step at that time was to meet with my doctor to review the results of the tests and map out a treatment strategy. This meeting was originally scheduled for yesterday, but due to "network problems" at UCSF, we were only able to meet the doctor in person and wait for word later in the day about the tests. We were able to talk with the doctor last night (a warm, likable and trustworthy guy ) and found out that 1) nothing bad seems to have happened since the original tests in Wyoming, and 2) he would rather talk about treatment options in person, and how about next Friday the 23rd? This seems good. If it wasn't so good, I'd probably be in the hospital getting an unfortunate haircut about now.

In talking with the doctors last night, I was able to confirm my expectations as to what happens next. I have done a lot of reading and research, and many of you have furnished me with wonderful suggestions and resources (thank you!) For now, I'll just say that it will include traditional techniques, non-traditional techniques, diets, cosmic tribal jam sessions and anything I think will help. But I know that a lot of it has to do with me, so I am preparing my mind and body for a long, strenuous journey.

I feel well prepared. I'm learning that life is full of beauty and mystery and pleasure, in little things I used to overlook. This is my secret weapon: I've gotten much better at knowing how to live.

Again, thank you everyone for your thoughts, concerns and prayers. The feeling is mutual!

Love,

Dan
